NJOP TO UNVEIL BEST CHICKEN SOUP IN TIME FOR SHABBAT ACROSS AMERICA
NJOP Announces Finalists in the Better Than Your Bubby’s Chicken Soup Contest
NEW YORK, NY; March 5, 2009- Grab your soup spoons! Just in time for its annual Shabbat Across America/Canada Program to be held on March 20th, NJOP has announced the five finalists in the Better Than Your Bubby’s Chicken Soup Challenge. This search for the best chicken soup recipe in America will culminate in a final tasting to be held on March 12th in New York City. Contest details are available at http://betterthanyourbubbys.blogspot.com/.
Finalists are: Michael Cohen (Los Angeles, CA), Jackie Gregston (Hallsville, TX), Wolfgang Hanau (West Palm Beach, FL), Elizabeth Kratz (Bergenfield, NJ), and Diane Nemitz (Ludington, MI)
"In times like these, I think the whole country could use a bowl of good chicken soup,” said Rabbi Ephraim Buchwald, director of NJOP. "The Jewish tradition revolves around family and festivity. Through the Chicken Soup Challenge, we hope to reinforce the notion that Jewish life is fun - and delicious - and that our heritage, like our recipes, can be passed carefully from generation to generation. We will share the winning recipe for participants of Shabbat Across America and Jewish families everywhere."
The five finalist recipes will be evaluated by a prestigious panel of judges on March 12th:
- Jeff Nathan, owner of Abigael’s on Broadway
- Melissa Clark, New York Times food writer and author
- Paul Dillon, Executive Director of the Culinary Arts Institute of Hudson County
- Jamie Geller, author of Quick and Kosher
- Elan Kornblum, Great Kosher Restaurants International Magazine
- Lenore Skenazy, op-ed columnist whose musings can be seen in over 100 papers
The contest coincides with NJOP's 13th annual Shabbat Across America, which will be held on March 20, 2009. Just as traditional "Jewish" food is a unifying element to Jews of all background, SAA is an unparalleled display of unity as tens of thousands of Jews celebrate Shabbat across the country. The special event is held annually at hundreds of locations across North America and welcomes participants of all denominations.
